Nelson Mandela once said, “There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return.”
Every year at Living Hope, we celebrate Mandela Day by commemorating Nelson Mandela’s birthday and honoring his legacy through community projects. Mandela Day is a global movement for positive change and it starts with small actions. Each person’s effort fuels momentum, raising awareness and expanding the reach of Mandela’s values—fighting injustice, helping those in need, and practicing reconciliation. Mandela Day calls on individuals everywhere to take responsibility for creating a better world, one small step at a time, just as Nelson Mandela did.
With just about 10 days left until Mandela Day on 18 July, many individuals and companies are still looking for ways to support causes they care about. We invite you to join us for 67 minutes this Mandela Day to help us in packing soup and hygiene kits. No need to RSVP, just arrive on the day!
Why Get Involved?
There is still much to be done. Nonprofit organizations like Living Hope rely heavily on volunteers to achieve our goals and increase our impact. 67 minutes of service on Mandela Day provides an opportunity to engage in short, impactful projects. We have seen that even brief interventions, such as street cleanups or painting a building, can have long-lasting effects on the community. These activities bring together different sectors of society in ways they may not have connected otherwise, shedding light on the challenges in our communities and encouraging action. Even if you cannot stay for the full 67 minutes, we are also in need of donated items. Alongside the shelf-stable soup mixes, Living Hope aims to provide other essential non-food items to adults and children in crisis. We are looking for the following types of donations.
Essential Non-Food Items:
• Toiletries: Deodorant, toilet paper, face cloths, body lotion, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.
• Feminine products: Sanitary towels and tampons
• Baby supplies: Nappies, baby wipes, and baby food
Food Items:
• Dried soup mix and/or soup powder
As we approach Mandela Day 2024, let us ask ourselves: What will we contribute to our communities? How can we honor Nelson Mandela’s legacy through meaningful action? Let’s make this day count. How will you spend your 67 minutes this Mandela Day?
